Who Can Participate

The LKMS Spelling Bee is open to qualifying students from grades six to eight. Each school is allotted one speller that it can send to the local Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee. Each English teacher will conduct a classroom bee in each of their classes. Teachers can select their best spellers in a variety of ways, including teacher nomination, written spelling exam, or an oral spelling exam. Selected students from their English teachers will participate in a grade level bee. Top winners in each grade level bee will participate in the schoolwide bee on January 10, 2019 in the Larkspur Auditorium. Parents of the schoolwide bee will be invited to watch along with the grade level qualifying students. The final winner from the LKMS Spelling Bee will go on to participate in the Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee on February 16, 2019 at 2 P.M. at the WHRO Studies located at 5200 Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk, VA. 23508. Local champions may have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in May in Washington, D.C.

The school was provided with school study lists that span 1st through 8th grade words with specific lists assigned by grade level.
